German Days

➤ Usage and Grammar of Days in German

In the German language, all days of the week are categorized as masculine nouns, thus they always take the definite article "der". A fundamental capitalization rule in German dictates that all nouns, including the days of the week, must start with an uppercase letter. When expressing that an event occurs on a specific day, the prepositional contraction "am" (a combination of an + dem) is utilized, such as in am Montag (on Monday). If one wishes to describe a recurring action that happens every week on a particular day, the day is transformed into an adverb by adding an "s" at the end and using lowercase letters (e.g., montags meaning "on Mondays" or "every Monday"). These temporal markers are essential for scheduling, formal correspondence, and daily conversational structures.
